SLAC -PUl.+800 October 1970 WC) RECENT AND PLANNED IMPROVEMENTS OF CONVENTIONAL ELECTRON LINACS*

This paper reviews the status of existing and planned electron linacs. The progress on development of superconducting electron linacs is not discussed except for a few remarks on the SLAC conversion program study. Progress in the superconducting area is being reported in other papers 1,2,3 which are being presented to this conference. Because the SLAC accelerator is the largest existing electron machine and it is located at the authors’ home institution, the main emphasis in this paper is given to reporting developments and plans at SLAC. The paper includes several recent ideas on the possible achievement of a somewhat higher duty cycle and/ or higher energy from the SLAC accelerator by recirculation of the beam through the accelerator structure.
